EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off a team victory at its home Windon Memorial Classic last week, Northwestern returns to competition Oct. 6-8 at the inaugural Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Erin, Wis.
The tournament, a brainchild of Marquette head coach and former Northwestern assistant Steve Bailey, features a 14-team field competing on the par-72, 7,234-yard layout of Erin Hills, which will host the 2017 U.S. Open after hosting the U.S. Amateur in 2011.
Included in the field are five top-50 teams in the current Golfstat.com rankings: No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 22 Stanford, No. 30 Northwestern, No. 40 Michigan and No. 43 Oregon State. UCLA also is a perennial top national team, but is unranked at the moment due to this event being its first of the season. DePaul, Green Bay, host Marquette, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, St. John's, SMU and Wisconsin round out the participants.
Northwestern performed a "worst to first" feat in its first two tourneys of the year, placing last among a difficult field at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational before coming back to win the Windon Memorial Classic over No. 16 Kent State. Senior All-American Jack Perry's (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) individual results mirrored NU's team finishes; he struggled through an injury while finishing last as an individual to open the year before bouncing back with a runner-up performance at the Windon.
Freshman Matt Fitzpatrick (Sheffield, England/Tapton) opened with a 6-under 66 last week before placing third overall for the Wildcats while junior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) shot consecutive under-par rounds during the 36-hole first day for a top-20 finish of his own.
