EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior John Callahan has been named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week following his first-career collegiate win at the Wildcats' home Windon Memorial Classic Sunday and Monday at Skokie Country Club.

Callahan was the lone competitor in the field to finish under par, carding a 1-under 212 bookended by a pair of 2-under 69s in the first and final rounds. On the final day of the Windon, Callahan surged into the lead with a back-nine eagle before Coastal Carolina's Ben Wheeler finished his event with three-straight birdies -- including a bunker hole-out on his 54th hole -- to tie Callahan. The NU junior, playing as an individual not in the Wildcats' team lineup, moments later drained a 25-foot putt on his last hole to win by one.

As a team, Northwestern finished in second place at its 15-team tournament, falling by just one stroke to Ohio State. Coupled with a win in its season-opening tourney at the 10-team Inverness Intercollegiate, Northwestern has opened the season at No. 13 in the nation in the first Golfstat.com rankings, best of any Big Ten school. Three other conference brethren also are in the top 25: Illinois (18), Ohio State (22) and Indiana (25).

Northwestern returns to action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the star-studded Olympia Fields Illini Invitational at the South Course (7,080 yards, par-70) in Olympia Fields, Ill. Teams will play 18 holes each day with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. CT Sunday and 8 a.m. CT Monday and Tuesday. Live results are available at Golfstat.com.

The 14-team field includes six teams in the Golfstat.com top-25: No. 2 SMU, No. 4 Florida, No. 13 Northwestern, No. 18 Illinois, No. 19 Clemson and No. 25 Indiana. In addition, Arkansas, Stanford, Florida State and Duke all were ranked in the Golf World/Nike preseason coaches poll. Auburn, Augusta State, Oklahoma State and Purdue round out the field.
