DUNDEE, Scotland -- Northwestern junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) advanced to the semifinals of the Fairstone Scottish Amateur Championship at Downfield Golf Club this week, winning six matches including a quarterfinal showdown with the reigning British Amateur winner.
Jamieson racked up 29 birdies and a pair of eagles in seven total matches as he shot through the 256-man draw. He became one of the last four standing with an emphatic 3 and 2 win over Bradley Neil in the quarters. Neil competed in the 2014 British Open and will tee it up at the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open by virtue of winning the British Amateur in June.
On Friday morning, however, it was Jamieson coming out on top. With the match all-square through three holes, Jamieson went eagle-birdie-birdie on the next trio of holes to withstand a birdie-par-birdie effort from Neil, emerging from the stretch with a 2-up lead. Though Neil would square the match with an eagle of his own at No. 11, Jamieson reeled off three straight birdies from Nos. 13 through 15 to take an insurmountable lead.
In the semifinal match Friday afternoon, Jamieson faced 2014 GCAA All-American Chris Robb, a native of Aberdeenshire who played collegiate golf at Chattanooga. Though Jamieson made four more birdies in the match, Robb carded six against just one bogey to end Jamieson's run, 4 and 3.
Jamieson won both big and small while carving his way through the field, earning a pair of 5 and 4 victories and one 7 and 5 win among his six triumphs in the tourney.
Earlier in the summer, Jamieson finished third in the Scottish U-21 Championship at his home course of St. Andrews.
Northwestern and Jamieson open the 2014 season Sept. 21-22 at the Wildcats' home Windon Memorial Classic at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
