EVANSTON, Ill. -- Seven Wildcats will join the best field ever assembled at the 2011 Western Amateur Championship August 2-6 at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
Current NU student-athletes John Callahan (Hinsdale, Ill./Benet Academy), Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel), Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) along with 2011 Northwestern graduate David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) have earned spots in the by-invitation-only 156-player field.
According to the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking, this year's Western Amateur represents the first time any amateur championship has had more than half of the world's top-50 players in its field. Thirty of the top-50, 13 of the top-20 and six of the top-10 including the top four amateurs in those rankings will compete at NSCC beginning Tuesday.
Since it began in 1899, past winners of the Western Amateur include many of golf's biggest names, such as Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Francis Ouimet, Tom Weiskopf, Tiger Woods, Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard and Andy North. With eight Western Amateur titles, former Northwestern student and founder of the Evans Scholar Program Chick Evans holds the record for most victories in the prestigious event.
The tournament begins with two rounds of stroke play Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 2-3, before the first cut to the low 44 players and ties. After two more stroke play rounds on Thursday, Aug. 4, the low 16 advance to match play Aug. 5-6. Admission and parking are free.
Northwestern's veteran entries are quite familiar with North Shore Country Club, which hosted NU's Windon Memorial Classic in the falls of 2008 and 2010. Lipsky led Northwestern at last season's tournament with a sixth-place 1-under 212 following a final-round 2-under 69.
