GULLANE, Scotland -- Northwestern freshman Matt Fitzpatrick (Sheffield, England/Tapton) qualified for the field of the 2013 British Open July 18-21 at Muirfield by virtue of a second-place finish at the Gullane No. 1 site of Local Final Qualifying Tuesday.
Fitzpatrick, who won the 2012 British Boys Amateur and signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Northwestern last November, will be the third active Wildcat in the last eight years to compete in one of golf's four Major Championships. In 2006, then-senior Dillon Dougherty played in the Masters after finishing as runner-up at the 2005 U.S. Amateur. In 2011, then-junior Eric Chun finished just one stroke off the cut at the British Open at St. Andrews after earning a berth through International Final Qualifying in Malaysia.
Fitzpatrick fired a 2-under 141 at Gullane No. 1 during Tuesday's 36 hole final qualifier, putting himself in a second-place tie with Oscar Floren of Sweden and one stroke behind the site's medalist, fellow amateur Ben Stow. All three advanced to The Open.
Fitzpatrick began Tuesday with a 2-under 69 to sit in a third-place tie after the morning round, then, with three berths available, found himself in solo second at 4-under following an eagle at the par-5 12th hole in the afternoon.
He survived a tough closing six-hole stretch that evoked at least one bogey from everyone atop the leaderboard -- and three from Fitzpatrick himself -- to finish the second round at 1-over 72 and the qualifier at 1-under 141, enough to earn a tee time at Muirfield.
After playing in his first-career Major, Fitzpatrick will matriculate to Evanston to begin the Northwestern season in September.
