Men's Golf Finishes 19th at NCAA Championships

    May 29, 1998

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Northwestern men's golf team shot a two-over par 290 in the second round of the 101st Annual NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. The 'Cats two-day total of one-over par 577 was three shots more than the cut of 574, thus they will not be one of the 15 teams advancing.

Northwestern's 19th-place finish marks the second-consecutive Top 20 performance for the 'Cats. Last year, NU finished seventh, while its best showing was second in 1942. The Wildcats have now appeared in nine NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the Championships six times.

On Thursday, NU had three players post par 72s (Luke Donald, Josh Habig and Matt Seppanen). Jess Daley shot a two-over 74, while Erik Ciotti had a 77. Donald's two-day total of 142 put him in a seven-way tie for ninth place as a individual competitor. After the second round, the field is cut to include the top 15 teams plus the low nine individuals of teams not advancing. Donald was eliminated in the third hole of the play-off to determine the ninth and final individual competitor to advance.
