EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern enters this weekend's NCAA Central Regional at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., looking to advance to the NCAA National Championships for the second-straight year and the seventh time overall under head coach Pat Goss.
The Wildcats are the No. 9 overall seed at the Central Regional hosted by Notre Dame, which features a field of 14 teams. The top five squads following the 54-hole tournament will advance to The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., June 1-6, to compete for the 2010 national title.
Northwestern has a positive history at the Warren Golf Course, winning the team title at the 36-hole Notre Dame Spring Invitational on April 5, 2008. Then-sophomore David Lipsky won co-medalist honors at the tournament with a 1-under 139. Current junior Josh Dupont (seventh place) and current senior Jonathan Bowers (12th place) also were members of NU's lineup in that event.
Northwestern, ranked 50th in the nation according to the most recent Golfstat.com data, is the No. 9 seed at its Regional for the second-consecutive time. NU entered Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., with that seed in 2009 before finishing in a tie for fourth place to punch its ticket to the National Championships at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Northwestern is making its 25th all-time team appearance in NCAA postseason play. From 1997-2000, the Wildcats earned four-consecutive top-20 finishes in the nation, including a trio of top-10 efforts. NU was seventh in 1997 (when Goss was named National Coach of the Year), 19th in 1998, third in 1999 (when Luke Donald claimed the individual national championship) and eighth in 2000. Since 2000, Northwestern has been to seven NCAA Regionals, moving on in 2006 and 2009.
Lipsky enters this weekend after winning the Big Ten individual title two weeks ago. He has four top-four tournament finishes on the 2009-10 season. Sophomore Eric Chun, who was the Big Ten medalist in 2009, has placed in the top-20 in each of NU's final four tournaments of the spring.
Completing Northwestern's lineup this weekend is Dupont at No. 3, Bowers at No. 4 and sophomore Sam Chien at No. 5.
