BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In order to capture its fourth Big Ten championship in the last five years, Northwestern must revert to early-season form when it captured a pair of tournament championships (NU Windon Memorial Classic and Rice Intercollegiate) and finished second at another (Alister MacKenzie Invitational). The Wildcats, ranked 21st, 22nd and 23rd in three different national polls, begin play at the Big Ten Championships this Friday, May 2.

Two rounds are scheduled for Friday, with play beginning at 8 a.m. CST. The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday, with play starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. The course, the Indiana University Golf Course, will be par-71 and 6,942 yards.

Since their team championship at Rice in early February, the Wildcats have finished no higher than seventh in their last five tournaments.

The key for Northwestern this weekend is to get its top three players -- junior Tom Johnson, senior Bjorn Widerstedt and senior Scott Harrington -- clicking on all cylinders. Johnson and Harrington have both won individual tourney titles, while Widerstedt has a pair of fourth-place finishes to his credit.

Johnson, who earlier this spring was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch list (top 20 collegiate golfers), leads NU with a stroke average of 71.78. He is coming off a third-place finish at MSU's Fossum-Spartan Invitational.

Widerstedt, who placed 25th at the Fossum, is averaging 73.0 strokes per round, while Harrington is third at 73.27.

"I've said it all spring, but if our top three guys play well, we have an excellent chance of doing well or winning it all," says seventh-year NU coach Pat Goss. "Bjorn, Scott and Tom have all played some outstanding golf this year. And the guys we have playing with them are also capable of turning in some solid rounds, too. I'm anxious to see how it goes."

Johnson, Widerstedt and Harrington have respective low rounds of 65, 66 and 68 this year.

NU, under Goss, won Big Ten championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001 before finishing fourth last year. Minnesota is the defending Big Ten champion.
