EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fresh off its title at the Big Ten Match Play Championship last weekend, Northwestern travels to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Feb. 21-23, for the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue.
The setting for the event will be the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club, where competitors will compete in 18 holes per day. Action on Sunday and Monday will commence by way of a 6 a.m. CT shotgun start, while Tuesday's final round will get under way with a shotgun start at 5:30 a.m. CT.
Headlined by top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 10 Texas, the Puerto Rico Classic will play host to 10 teams ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. In addition to the pair of top-10 teams on the slate, the field also features No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 17 Georgia, No. 18 Alabama, No. 28 Clemson, No. 36 Kent State, No. 37 East Tennessee State, No. 40 Virginia Tech and 42nd-ranked Michigan.
The Wildcats went 4-0 at the Match Play event, topping Wisconsin before knocking off No. 3 seed Michigan, No. 2 seed Iowa and Purdue in the final. The victory was the 25th tournament title for Northwestern under 14th-year head coach Pat Goss.
