EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern opens the 2013-14 spring season this Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 23-25, at beautiful Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, P.R., for the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue.
The three-day event will feature 18 holes per day on the 6,902-yard, par-72 tract. Live results will be available via Golfstat.com while NU head coach Pat Goss will provide live Twitter updates from the course @NUGolf_Live.
A near annual stop on the Wildcats' calendar, NU finished among the top half last season of what is a strong field year in and year out. The 2014 edition features five of the current Golfstat.com top-10 and 10 of the current top-50. This year's 15-team field is comprised of No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 25 SMU, No. 33 Northwestern, No. 38 Purdue, No. 42 Clemson, No. 43 North Carolina, No. 59 Missouri, No. 62 UNC Greensboro, No. 66 East Tennessee State, No. 93 N.C. State and No. 108 Michigan.
Northwestern is coming off a third-place finish at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, where it went 2-1 overall, last weekend. In stroke this season, the Wildcats won two team titles in the fall paced by senior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and his four individual top-10 performances including one victory.
At the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic, NU sat in 11th position following 18 holes before surging to finish in sixth place.
