NU Men's Golf Ties for Third Place at Big Ten Championships
Luke Donald Finishes in Fourth Place, Named All-Big Ten
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's golf team shot a six-under-par 282 in Sunday's final round to tie for third place at thace at the 1998 Big Ten Conference Championship in East Lansing, Mich. NU and Minnesota each posted team scores of 1,188, 11 strokes behind tournament champion Indiana. Ohio State finished second at 1,180.
Individually for the Wildcats, freshman Luke Donald (Buckinghamshire, England) fired a final-round 67 to take fourth place at three-over-par 291, four strokes behind tournament champion Ryan Armour of Ohio State. Donald's 67 was tied for the lowest round of the tournament. Sophomore Jess Daley (Kent, Wash./Kentwood)shot 68 on Sunday to tie for ninth place at 296. Other Wildcat finishes were Matt Seppanen (12th, 298), Erik Ciotti (t30th, 305) and David Shaffer (t49th, 314).
Donald was the lone Wildcat on this year's All-Big Ten squad, posting just the second an average of 72.5 strokes per round this season, the second-lowest total in Northwestern history. He also is just the second NU freshman ever to be named All-Big Ten, joining three-time All-American Scott Rowe, who was the 1994 Big Ten Freshman of the Y will be paired with Kansas and Texas A&M for Thursday's opening round and Friday's second round. The Central Regionals end Sat., May 16, with the top 10 teams and two individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 20-23 in Albuquerqueear. Coming off last year's second-place performance, this marks just the second time in recent history that NUhas posted back-to-back finishes of third place or better attttttnext weekend for the NCAA Central Regionals. NU, seeded fourth in the distric the Big Ten Championship. NU took third place in 1986 and runner-up in 1987.
The Wildcats travel to San Antonio to take place in the NCAA Central regionals, which take place from May 14-16.
