NU Men's Golf Finishes in Fourth Place at Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Led by Erik Ciotti's two-under-par 211, the Northwestern mens golf team opened the 1997-98 season with a fourth-place finish at this weekends Keswick Club Cavalier Classic. NU finished with a total of 869, 13 strokes behind tournament host and team champion Virginia. The Cats finished in fourth despite not having the services of their No. 2 player, Matt Seppanen, who is sidelined due to a strained lower back.

Ciotti posted rounds of 71-67-73 to finish in a two-way tie for second place. The second round score of 67 marks his best round as a Wildcat. Mississippi States Chad Wellhausen won the individual title at seven-under-par 207.

Freshman Luke Donald (Buckinghamshire, England) opened his NU career with a 14th-place finish at three-over-par 216. Other Wildcat individual totals included Josh Habig (t39th, 223), David Shaffer (t44th, 224) and Jess Daley (t48th, 226).

The Cats will travel next to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational on Sept. 28-30. The field for the Preview includes 14 of the top 15 teams from last years NCAA Championships.
