SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Paced by a second-round 7-under 65 by sophomore Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto), 16th-ranked Northwestern is challenging host UCLA, the nation's fifth-ranked team, for the first CordeValle Collegiate title.
The Wildcats, who fired an 11-under 277 in the second round, are 8-under (291-277=568) for the first two rounds and just three strokes back of the host Bruins (284-281=565). Arkansas is third at 1-under while Texas and California are tied for fourth at 3-over.
Moore fired the tournament's best individual round (65) after opening with a 3-over 75. His 4-under 140 (75-65) has him tied for third place, two strokes back of UCLA's Daniel Im. Moore's 65 is a career-best and three strokes off the Wildcats' 18-hole record.
Northwestern also received strong performances from senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) and junior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union). Both players are tied for fifth place with 3-under 141's. Dougherty carded a 4-under 68 in the second round after a 1-over 73 on the first 18. Merkow posted rounds of 69 and 72 for his 3-under score.
Sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) is 26th with a 2-over 146 (74-72). Junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) is 71st at 10-over (76-78=154).
