GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) made a whopping 13 birdies and fired a pair of 4-under 68s Saturday during the first day of competition at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate to earn a share of the lead with four other golfers at 8-under 136. Northwestern as a team is in seventh place in the 14-team field after 36 holes of play at Forest Oaks Country Club.
Lipsky opened his day with a double-bogey 5 on his very first hole before proceeding to scorch the course with six birdies the rest of the way, including making birdie on each of the final three holes of the first round for a 4-under 68. He made a bogey and another double-bogey in the second round, but carded seven birdies in the afternoon to again turn in a 4-under 68. Lipsky has been at par or better in each of his last four rounds this year.
Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) is in 17th place entering Sunday's final round at 4-under 140 (68-72). In the first round, Chun quickly got to 2-under after beginning the shotgun start on the ninth hole before a pair of bogeys evened his score-to-par. He immediately recovered with an eagle on the 578-yard par 5 18th hole. After a third bogey on No. 3, he made three-consecutive birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to finish the morning tied with his teammate Lipsky at 4-under 68.
Chun was unable to replicate his hot finish in the afternoon round, finishing at even-par 72 after back-to-back bogeys on his final two holes.
As a team, Northwestern is in seventh position at 9-under 567 (285-282), three strokes behind both UNCG and Charlotte, which are tied for fifth. NU is four shots in front of eighth-place Toledo. Despite a pair of 4-under rounds from Lipsky and Chun in the morning, the rest of the Wildcats were at least 2-over par to even out those efforts. In the afternoon, every Wildcat on the team was at or under par for a much more solid team performance.
Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) is 42nd as an individual at 1-over 145 ( 74-71). Much like his fellow Wildcats, Losole had a nice hot streak in the morning with three birdies in a four hole span from Nos. 13-16 after teeing off at No. 10, but a 4-over front side left him a 2-over 74. In the afternoon round, Losole again was 2-under par on the back nine before a much better front side left him at 1-under 71 and 1-over after 36 holes.
Senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is in 51st position at 2-over 146 (75-71). Dupont had a wild opening round, making two birdies and holing his approach at the 352-yard par-4 16th for an eagle. Unfortunately, he also made three bogies and a pair of double-bogeys to end up at 3-over 75 after 18 holes of play.
Dupont was much steadier in the second round, carding three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars to earn a 1-under 71.
Junior Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) went 75-72 Saturday to conclude his day at 3-over 147 (75-72). A pair of double bogeys on two par 3s in the morning contributed to the 3-over 75, and the afternoon was shaping up to be even worse after a triple-bogey at the 454-yard par-4 15th left him with a 4-over 40 on his opening nine. Chien recovered, however, with four birdies in the first six holes of his inbound nine to finish at even-par 72 in the second round.
The UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate concludes tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 24, with the final 18 holes of play.
