ERIN, Wis. -- On a day set up for scoring at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, Northwestern fired its best total of the three-day tournament to finish fifth behind a pack of highly ranked opponents.
The Wildcats carded a 3-under 285 for a 54-hole score of 2-over par 866 (289-292-285), putting the 'Cats three strokes behind a third-place tie between No. 6 Oklahoma and SMU. No. 3 UCLA finished second while No. 22 Stanford won the event. Northwestern's 285 was the third-best team total of the day, but NU was passed for fourth place by the Sooners after the top-10 squad fired a 6-under 282.
Sophomore Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) led Northwestern in the final round with a 3-under 69 to match his collegiate-best total score and total to par. He made just one bogey on the day and used back-to-back birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 to get to sub-70 territory. His performance allowed him to finish 13th overall at 1-over 217 (74-74-69) after entering the final round in 30th position.
Senior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) picked up his second-straight top-10 result of the season with a 2-under 70 in the final round to give him a 10th-place total of 1-under 215 (76-69-70). Perry got to 1-under on the day with an impressive birdie on the 248-yard par-3 sixth, using a hybrid off the tee to earn a makeable birdie putt. He fought off early and late bogeys with a great stretch on Nos. 14 and 15, making eagle on the reachable par-5 14th before a birdie at the driveable par-4 15th.
Junior Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) made a 10-stroke improvement from the second round to the third, bouncing back from an 8-over 80 Monday to shoot a 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round. Negri turned in 1-under par after a three-birdie front side, then made two more birdies coming home to aid in his 70. Overall, Negri moved up 19 spots in the standings to finish 30th at 6-over 222 (72-80-70).
Freshman Matt Fitzpatrick (Sheffield, England/Tapton) hit a rough stretch in the middle of his round, making four straight bogeys from holes 10 through 13 to end up with a final round 4-over 76. Fitzpatrick placed 23rd overall at 3-over 219 (71-72-76).
