GLENCOE, Ill. -
Trailing by 10 shots entering the final round of play, the Northwestern men's golf used all 54 holes of competition to rally back and claim the title at the Windon Memorial Classic Monday afternoon at Lake Shore Country Club.
The title was the third for the Wildcats in the 11 times the Windon has been held and its third in the last five times the tournament has been played. Previously, NU's most recent Windon title came in 2004.
Northwestern finished with a 4-under total of 848 for the tournament compared to runner-up Kent State's score of 3-under 849.
The Wildcats trailed Kent State entering the final 18 holes of play, but gradually made their move toward what proved to be a back-and-forth finish. The Golden Flashes took a one-shot lead into the 18th hole of the last group of play. However, a triple bogey opened the door for Northwestern as Kyle Moore settled for a bogey to give NU the comeback win.
Dan Doyle was the Wildcats' top individual finisher, placing third with a 5-under 208, including a team-best 3-under 68 in the final round. David Lipsky finished just one shot behind Doyle in fourth place at 4-under.
Kyle Moore wrapped up his solid tournament by tying for seventh place with a total of 211, good for 2-under. Like his teammate Lipsky, Jonathan Bowers competed as an individual and fired a 1-over par 214.
Andy DeKeuster continued his strong fall season by posting an under-par round of 70 Monday to conclude play tied for 16th at 2-over par. Also competing for the Wildcats, Matt Denison finished tied for 22nd at 3-over while Ravi Patel finished in a tie for 40th place at 9-over. Josh Dupont, who was disqualified from Sunday's second round, fired a 2-under 69 over the final 18 holes of play.
Mike Van Sickle of Marquette and Clayton Rask of Minnesota tied for medalist honors with each player finishing with a 7-under score of 206. Van Sickle shot a 66 during the final round of play while Rask did him one shot better with a tournament-best round of 65.
