WAYZATA, Minn. -- Freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) has started his collegiate career on a strong note, sitting in 10th place at the 12-team Gopher Invitational, being played at the Spring Hill Golf Club.

Bowers shot a 5-over 77 on his first 18 holes before coming back to shoot one of the best rounds of the day -- a 2-under 70 -- to climb into the tourney's top 10. Bowers, who is 3-over (77-70=147), is nine strokes back of the leader, SMU's Colt Knost.

As a team, the 24th-ranked Wildcats are in ninth place (314-300=614).

Seniors David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) are 30th and 33rd, respectively. Merkow is 9-over (76-77=153) while Wilson is 10-over (79-75=154).

The third and final round is set for Sunday morning.
