OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Northwestern began its 2013-14 season Friday at the opening round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., in blustery and difficult conditions on the North Course.

NU largely struggled on its opening day, ending with a 27-over 307 to sit in 14th-place overall, two strokes behind Clemson and one shot in front of Florida. The 15-team OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational field is star-studded, featuring nine teams that made the NCAA Championships last year including reigning national champion Alabama, which leads after Friday's action.

Northwestern teed off on the back nine and largely avoided big numbers with just three combined double bogeys on the day. NU, however, struggled to make any red numbers, getting its first and only birdie of the first round from Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) at the par-3 eighth -- his 17th hole of the day.

Sophomore Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) led Northwestern with an opening 4-over 74, making 14 pars and four bogeys in his round to sit 26th after 18 holes. Freshman Matt Fitzpatrick's (Sheffield, England/Tapton) first collegiate round began with eight-straight pars before three-straight bogeys from Nos. 18 to 2 and again from Nos. 7 through 9 left him in 46th place at 6-over 76.

Junior Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) fired an 8-over 78 while Perry ended his day at 9-over 79. Junior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) rounded out NU's lineup with an 11-over 81.

The second round of the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational gets underway at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 14.
