Big Ten Championships Day One Results
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) leads the field at the 2009 Big Ten Championships after the first two rounds Friday at the Blue Course in University Park, Pa.
Chun shot rounds of 1-under 70 and 3-under 68 on Friday to hold a 1-stroke lead halfway through the tournament with a 4-under 138. Chun opened with two bogies in his first four holes in round one before recording 11 pars and three birdies the rest of the way. In the second round, Chun made four birdies and just one bogey.
Chun is one of four golfers under par at the halfway point, leading No. 69 Jack Newman of Michigan State (-3), Matt Hoffman of Illinois (-1) and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin (-1).
Northwestern as a team is tied for sixth place at 18-over 586 (290-296), seven strokes off the lead. NU is even with host Penn State, one stroke in front of Michigan and Wisconsin, both of which are tied for eighth. Ohio State leads the field at 11-over, followed by Illinois (+12), Minnesota (+13), Indiana (+13) and Iowa (+14).
Junior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) is in 20th position at 5-over 147 (73-74). Bowers had an adventurous second round, making six bogies and one double bogey before finishing with three birdies on the final four holes to help him to a 3-over 74 in his second 18 holes of the day.
Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is in 41st place at 9-over 151 (73-78), while David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) is 43rd at 10-over 152 (76-76). Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) rounds out NU's squad at the Big Ten Championships in 46th place at 11-over 153 (74-79).
The Big Ten Championships continue tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, with the third round before concluding with Sunday's final round.
