WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern fired its best round of the Boilermaker Invitational Sunday at the Kampen Course and finished sixth overall among the 15-team field to conclude the 2013-14 regular season.

NU carded a 3-over 291 after back-to-back 296s on Saturday to finish at 19-over 883. The 49th ranked Wildcats placed five shots in front of seventh-place No. 39 Purdue and six stroke on top of eighth-place No. 32 Kent State. No. 41 Iowa came from behind to defeat No. 9 Illinois by one stroke atop the standings while No. 14 UCLA came in third.

Sophomore Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) put together his best round of the season in the final round of the Boilermaker. After starting hot and cooling off in each of his first two rounds of this tournament, Smith reversed the trend to great results Sunday. Though he was 2-over par through 11 holes, he finished with a flurry that included four birdies in a six-hole stretch to aid in a 1-under 71, jumping Smith from 32nd entering the final round to a 22nd-place finish at 5-over 221 (76-74-71).

Smith's 22nd place result matched his previous career-best established as an individual competitor at the 2013 Northwestern Spring Invitational.

Senior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) recovered from over par rounds on Saturday to get back into his familiar red figures in Sunday's final round. Perry made three birdies against two bogeys for a 1-under 71, tying him with Scott for 22nd place at 5-over 221 (76-74-71).

Junior Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) was two strokes north of par after nine holes before making birdie at No. 14. Though he made an error with a double bogey at No. 17, he finished with a birdie on his final hole of the tournament for his third-straight 2-over 74 of the tournament, finishing in 26th at 6-over 222 (74-74-74).

Sophomore Andrew Whalen (Ephrata, Wash./Ephrata) began his final round with a flurry of activity, making two birdies and two bogeys in his first four holes. After that point, Whalen carded three bogeys and the rest pars for a final round 3-over 75. He finished in tied with Negri in 26th place at 6-over 222 for the tournament (70-77-75).

Junior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), who rebounded from an opening 79 Saturday with a 74 in the second round, performed a mini-version of that feat within Sunday's final round. Lavin began with five bogeys in his first eight holes before booking a pair of birdies and a later eagle at the 517-yard par-5 fourth hole to get all the way back to 2-over par. Though he would finish with a bogey, his 3-over 75 was a good result given his start. Lavin placed 52nd in the field at 12-over 228 (79-74-75).

Northwestern returns to action May 2-4 at the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind.
