RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- With round one complete at the three-day Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at Rio Mar Country Club, Northwestern stands in 11th position among the 15-team field.

The Wildcats fired a 9-over 297 in the opening round, putting them one stroke behind 10th place East Tennessee State and just seven shots out of sixth.

The teams endured a 15-minute "torrential downpour" early the round before settling in to compete under overcast skies. More than half of the 15-team field (eight team) are in the top-40 of the current rankings.

Senior Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) made birdie on his first hole of the day, No. 12, before back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15. Losole recovered to make birdie at No. 16 before getting himself into red numbers with a birdie on the 435-yard par-4 first. He then rolled off a string of seven-straight pars before another birdie at No. 9 to get to 2-under, but a bogey on his 17th hole ended his day with a 1-under 71, placing him 15th in the field.

Junior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) began his day with three opening pars, including draining a 12-footer on his first hole. He then made birdie at the 544-yard par-5 15th to get into red numbers. While a bogey at No. 1 evened his card, Perry got back to under par with a birdie on No. 6. One more bogey, this one on the par-5 eighth, left Perry at even-par 72 for the opening round and 21st in the field.

Freshman Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) found himself 5-over par through seven holes Sunday after hooking his tee shot in the water and making double at No. 17 and then taking a triple bogey on the par-3 third hole. He bounced back with a birdie right away on the 575-yard par-4 fourth, and was able to keep that level steady with one more bogey and a birdie the rest of the way. Jamieson is in 53rd place at 4-over 76.

Sophomore Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) started his day with an out-of-bounds ball on No. 15 that led to a double bogey, then endured a stretch of three bogeys in five holes from Nos. 1 through 5 to find himself 5-over par through 10 holes. Negri recovered to reel off four-straight pars with several putts that hung on the lip to prevent birdies. He eventually notched his first birdie of the day at No. 17, but a bogey at his last gave him a 6-over 78 and put him 61st individually.

Sophomore Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) was steady from the start, getting to 1-under par through five holes with a birdie at No. 17, but then a quadruple bogey at No. 18 after he hit a ball out of bounds began an upward trend in his day's scoring. Bogeys at Nos. 3, 6 and 7 got him to 6-over for the day before he held serve from there with five-consecutive pars to end his round tied with Negri for 61st at 6-over 78.

The 2013 Puerto Rico Classic resumes tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 18, with the second round at Rio Mar Country Club.
