EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern true freshman cornerback Matthew Harris (LaGrange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) was selected to the ESPN.com Big Ten All-Freshman Team, the outlet announced Monday (Dec. 16).

Harris, one of two true freshmen to see the field for the Wildcats in 2013, appeared in all 12 games during his rookie campaign, starting at corner in each of the final five outings. Harris' first career start against Iowa on Oct. 26 made him the first true freshman to start on defense for Northwestern since Sherrick McManis in 2006, Pat Fitzgerald's first season as head coach.

Harris collected 36 total tackles on the year to go along with five pass breakups. He also made significant contributions on special teams coverage and return teams, leading Northwestern in total kick returns (21) and return yards (484), averaging 23.0 yards per attempt.

This year marks the second straight season in which the Wildcats landed a true freshman from the defensive side of the ball on the ESPN.com Big Ten All-Freshman squad after defensive end Dean Lowry earned the nod in 2012.
