EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University Director of Athletics Jim Phillips and TicketCity Bowl President/CEO Tom Starr have announced that the University has accepted a bid to play in the inaugural TicketCity Bowl, Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 in Dallas, Texas.
The Wildcats (7-5), the Big Ten Conference representative, will play Texas Tech University (7-5), the Big 12 Conference representative, at 11 a.m. CST (ESPNU HD, WGN 720 AM, WNUR 89.3 FM) at the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas. This is the first meeting between the two schools.
"To be certain, we're thrilled about taking the Wildcats to Dallas for another New Year's Day bowl game," said Jim Phillips, Northwestern's director of athletics. "The Big Ten Conference put together a tremendous new bowl lineup this year and we're excited to be the conference's representative in this inaugural bowl. I know everyone associated with Northwestern and all our passionate fans will have a tremendous experience in Dallas. We are honored and enthusiastically accept this wonderful opportunity to travel to the TicketCity Bowl and represent the Big Ten Conference."
Northwestern gained its bowl berth by producing a seven-win season that included a November win over 13th-ranked Iowa. Northwestern, which was ranked in the top-25 on two different occasions this fall, finished in a seventh-place tie in the Big Ten Conference with a 3-5 record. The TicketCity Bowl pits the seventh selection from the Big Ten vs. the eighth selection from the Big 12. Texas Tech (7-5, 3-5 Big 12) won three of its final four games, which included a victory over 14th-ranked Missouri, to earn its 11th consecutive bowl trip.
"We're extremely proud of our football program, which is making a third consecutive bowl trip," said Northwestern Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald. "We're proud to represent the Big Ten for a second straight year on New Year's Day, and do it against Texas Tech, a tremendous opponent from the Big 12 Conference. I'm thrilled for our 12 seniors, who have the opportunity to help us win a bowl game and become the winningest senior class in our program's modern era."
The TicketCity Bowl, the first football game to be played in 2011, is the newest intercollegiate postseason bowl game. The inaugural contest assures that postseason play remains intact in the city of Dallas and at the fabled Cotton Bowl, which has been the site of more college bowl games than any other in the nation other than the equally famous Rose Bowl stadium. The TicketCity Bowl is also the first college bowl game to be televised by ESPNU and the contest will be unopposed at kickoff on New Year's Day, the most traditional of all bowl dates.
Northwestern fans are strongly encouraged to purchase their tickets through the Northwestern Ticket Office. Tickets can be purchased online at NUsports.com, by calling 888-GOPURPLE (467-8775) or 847-491-CATS (2287), in person at the ticket office (1501 Central Street, Evanston, Ill. 60208) or by mailing in an application, which will be found on the Northwestern web site starting Monday.
The 'Cats are making their ninth all-time postseason bowl appearance, and their eighth in the last 16 years.
