Capital One Academic All-District Honorees -- Complete Release

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Doug Bartels (Caledonia, Ill./Rockford Boylan Catholic), Jacob Schmidt (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Patrick Ward (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) and Kevin Watt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) all have been named Capital One Academic All-District V first-team selections, announced today (Nov. 10) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The four Wildcat representatives on the Academic All-District team are the most since 2007 when Northwestern also had four players earn the distinction. Bartels has earned the honor in three straight seasons while Ward and Watt are now two-time recipients.

Bartels is an offensive lineman who has made 25 starts after arriving at Northwestern as a walk-on. He earned a scholarship three seasons ago and, after earning his undergraduate degree in anthropology, is in the process of obtaining a master's degree in liberal studies.

Running back Jacob Schmidt graduated with a degree in human development and psychological services and currently is pursuing a master's degree in higher education administration. He began his NU career as a walk-on and has since established himself as a starter in the backfield. The Rhinelander, Wis., native is Northwestern's second-leading rusher with 330 yards in 2011 with a 4.9-yard per carry average. Schmidt topped 100 yards in a game for the first time at Indiana and now has five touchdowns this season and 10 for his career.

Ward is a junior offensive lineman majoring in mechanical engineering. After being one of three true freshmen to see the field in 2009, Ward has remained a fixture at right tackle for the Wildcats, starting 30 consecutive games over the last three seasons.

Watt earned his undergraduate degree in learning and organizational change and also is pursuing postgraduate studies. The Glen Ellyn product has made 16 starts over his career and currently has 17 tackles in 2011 -- including a season-high five against Penn State -- with 1.5 for loss.

To be eligible for the award, a player must be in at least his second year of athletic eligibility, be a first-team or key performer and carry a cumulative 3.30 grade point average. As first-team All-District selections, the Wildcat quartet will be placed on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.
