Capital One Academic All-District Teams -- Complete Release

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior offensive lineman Patrick Ward and senior defensive tackle Brian Arnfelt have been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday. Ward and Arnfelt are two of 26 players representing District V, which draws from NCAA Division I universities across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Ward is now a three-time Academic All-District honoree while Arnfelt is receiving his first such distinction. By virtue of their selection to the All-District squad, the NU seniors will automatically be placed on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America voting, which last year saw Ward garner first team Academic All-America honors.

A three-year starter on the offensive line, Ward has started 35 career games for the Wildcats, making the switch this season to left tackle after previously calling the right side of the line his home. This year, Ward and his fellow offensive linemen have helped Northwestern post the third-best rushing average in the Big Ten and a top-15 average nationally (237.6 yards per game).

The native of Homer Glen, Ill. is a mechanical engineering major and also is a finalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, presented each year to the nation's most outstanding football student-athlete.

Arnfelt was voted a 2012 team captain by his teammates despite missing most of 2011 due to a foot injury. He has anchored a stout Northwestern defensive line this year, which has held opponents to 121.3 rushing yards per game, good for fourth in the Big Ten. Arnfelt has recorded 22 tackles in his senior campaign with 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.

Arnfelt, a native of Lake Elmo, Minn., graduated last spring with a degree in communication studies and currently is pursuing a master's degree in sports administration.

To be eligible for the award, a player must be in at least his second year of athletic eligibility, be a first-team or key performer on the field and carry a cumulative 3.30 grade point average.
