Three Wildcats Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Doug Bartels (Caledonia, Ill./Rockford Boylan Catholic), Stefan Demos (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and Zeke Markshausen (Capron, Ill./North Boone) all have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first-team selections, announced today (Nov. 5) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bartels is a sophomore offensive lineman who joined the program as a walk-on before earning a scholarship last season. He is majoring in anthropology with pre-medicine studies. Demos has handled all of Northwestern's kickoff, punting and place-kicking duties in 2009, making 13-of-15 field goals and 23-of-24 extra points. He is a junior communication studies major. Markshausen also went from walk-on status to earning a scholarship prior to the 2009 season. After catching one-career ball entering this season, he now leads the Big Ten with 7.4 catches per game including a whopping 9.8 per game in conference play. He graduated in June with a degree in mechanical engineering and currently is enrolled in graduate school pursuing a master's of engineering in design and innovation. Northwestern is one of four schools with three first-team selections in the fifth district, joining Indiana, Southern Illinois and Butler. To be eligible for the award, a player must be in at least his second year of athletic eligibility, be a first-team or key performer and carry a cumulative 3.30 grade point average. As first-team All-District selections, the Wildcat trio will be placed on the ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
