EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Doug Bartels (Caledonia, Ill./Rockford Boylan Catholic), Patrick Ward (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) and Kevin Watt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) all have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first-team selections, announced today (Nov. 4) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bartels is a junior offensive lineman who has made 25 starts after joining the program as a walk-on. He earned a scholarship two seasons ago, and is majoring in anthropology with pre-medicine studies.
Ward is a sophomore offensive lineman majoring in mechanical engineering. He was one of three true freshman to see the field during the 2009 season before earning starts in all eight of Northwestern's games thus far in 2010.
Watt is a junior defensive end majoring in learning and organizational change. Watt has made eight starts over his career and currently has 15 tackles in 2010 including 4.0 for loss with three quarterback hurries and a blocked punt.
This season marks the second-straight year that three Wildcats have been named to the All-District V first team. Bartels is a two-time winner of the award.
To be eligible for the award, a player must be in at least his second year of athletic eligibility, be a first-team or key performer and carry a cumulative 3.30 grade point average. As first-team All-District selections, the Wildcat trio will be placed on the ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
