EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Wildcats will host the first ever Peanut Free Day at Ryan Field on Saturday, October 19 when the Minnesota Golden Gophers come to town for an important Big Ten Legends Division game.
"We're excited to host our first Peanut Free Day at Ryan Field," said Northwestern head football coach Pat Fitzgerald. "Nut allergies affect a sizable segment of the population and those people have to be very conscious of it at all times, in environments outside their control. This special day will give many people that may never have attended a live sporting event the opportunity to experience Chicago's Big Ten Team for the first time. Our entire football family is thrilled to be part of such a great initiative."
In order to create a safe and comfortable environment for all fans to enjoy, on Saturday, October 19 peanuts will not be sold or permitted anywhere inside Ryan Field. The stadium will also undergo extensive cleaning prior to the game in order to ensure that no peanut material remains anywhere in the facility. It is believed that this will be the first time that a college football venue has gone completely peanut free for a game.
According to the web site foodallergy.org, approximately three million people in the United States are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts or both. In fact, studies show that the number of young people living with peanut allergies has tripled from 1997-2008.
"This is a great opportunity for Northwestern to reach out to a group of fans that may not have had the chance to experience Big Ten football ever before," said Ryan Chenault, Northwestern's Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing.
Northwestern and Minnesota will kick off at 11 a.m. on October 19. Tickets are still available for the contest online or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE (888-467-8775) today.
