Sept. 24, 2013
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips announced on Tuesday the addition of Northern Illinois to the Wildcats' 2014 football schedule. The Wildcats and Huskies will meet Saturday, Sept. 6, at Ryan Field in Evanston.
Northwestern, currently 4-0 and ranked No. 16 in the nation in the USA Today Coaches poll, has not faced off with NIU on the football field since the 2005 season. The Huskies, 3-0 this year and 37-8 since the start of the 2010 campaign, have captured back-to-back Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships in 2011 and 2012.
"This is a truly exciting time for Chicago's Big Ten Team as we continue to upgrade our nonconference football schedule," said Phillips. "Both Pat Fitzgerald and I have said repeatedly that Northwestern is committed to challenging itself in nonconference play, in addition to the always rigorous Big Ten slate. We're excited to add the two-time defending MAC champions and 2013 Orange Bowl participants, and in-state program that I have the deepest respect and admiration for, to a list of future opponents that already includes teams such as California, Notre Dame and Stanford. There has never been a better time to be a Wildcats football fan."
Northwestern has enjoyed great success in its challenging nonconference competition under Fitzgerald, amassing a 9-1 record against teams from BCS auto-qualifier conferences since the start of the 2008 season. In 2012, the Wildcats became the first non-independent program since 2006 to earn wins over opponents from four different BCS conferences (ACC, Big East, Big Ten, SEC).
