EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the heels of his two-touchdown performance in No. 22 Northwestern's season-opening victory at Cal, junior linebacker Collin Ellis (St. Gabriel, La./The Dunham School) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Despite the play of two offenses that combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense, it was two defensive plays by Ellis that turned the tide in Northwestern's favor in a 44-30 outcome. As the game evolved into a back-and-forth affair in the second half, Ellis recorded one interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth, becoming the first player in NU history to turn that trick.

Ellis also is the first Big Ten player since at least 1996 and the first FBS defender since Sept. 15, 2012, to notch two "pick-sixes" in the same contest.

The junior, who finished with four tackles and three pass breakups, was making his first appearance in the starting lineup since his redshirt freshman season in 2011. He is the first Northwestern player to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors since fellow linebacker Chi Chi Ariguzo on Sept. 10 of last season.
