EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Kain Colter (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) is one of 30 FBS quarterbacks from across college football named to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award, presented annually to the nation's top signal-caller. The Manning Award winner is selected by a voting panel of media members as well as Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning following the conclusion of all regular-season and postseason bowl games.
The preseason watch list consists of the top 30 returning quarterbacks according to ESPN's new Total Quarterback Rating (QBR), which measures a QB's contributions to scoring on each play (passing, rushing, sacks, fumbles, and penalties) accounting for game context (down, distance, yard line, time remaining, and score) and adjusted for opponent strength. It is based on a 0-100 scale and 50 is average.
The dual-threat Colter is coming off a 2012 season in which he started 12-of-13 games under center, threw for 872 yards and completed 67.8 percent of his pass attempts. He also racked up 894 rushing yards and averaged 5.3 yards per rushing attempt, and accounted for 20 total touchdowns on the season (12 rushing, eight passing). Entering his senior year, Colter stands fifth all-time at Northwestern with 23 career rushing scores.
A unique talent in college football, Colter also has been a threat throughout his career as a pass-catcher, having totaled 667 receiving yards and three receiving TDs over his three seasons at Northwestern. He named an honorable mention All-Big Ten performer in both his sophomore and junior seasons.
A list of 10 finalists for the Manning Award will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the winner being chosen on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014. Past winners of the award, which was created in 2005, include Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel (2012), Baylor's Robert Griffin III (2011) and Florida's Tim Tebow (2008).
Northwestern, ranked No. 22 in the USA Today/Coaches preseason poll, opens the 2013 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, at California.
