CHICAGO, Ill. -- One week before the start of Northwestern training camp, NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald and three leaders of the 2010 team attended the 39th annual Big Ten Football Media Day Monday in Chicago. The 'Cats made the rounds at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, discussing topics ranging from the upcoming season and its Wrigley Field date versus Illinois to their thoughts on Big Ten expansion.
Joining Fitzgerald were defensive end Corbin Bryant and linebacker Quentin Davie as well as quarterback Dan Persa, each of whom endured a tight morning schedule that featured interviews with ESPN, the Big Ten Network and other national television and radio outlets.
With BTN providing live coverage of the event, Fitzgerald was the second of 11 coaches to address a packed room with more than 400 credentialed media members.
"(Northwestern's) foundation of success has provided us with motivation to take the next step," Fitzgerald said in his opening statement. "And what is that next step? First and foremost it's going to be to go to a bowl game for three straight years. Those things happen because we believe we've got great players."
"It's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young men to go down there," he said. "Especially for our student-athletes. It's going to be pretty neat to run out where Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus and George Halas were on that field."
Media Day continues on Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place beginning with a two-hour question-and-answer session with print and online media reporters. The players and coaches will then take part in an autograph and fan interaction session before heading into the annual Kickoff Luncheon.
