EVANSTON, Ill. -- A two-year starter at safety for the Wildcats, junior Ibraheim Campbell on Friday was named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list, landing him in a group of 48 of the nation's most outstanding defensive backs.
Since coming to Evanston from Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, Campbell has established himself as a fixture in the Northwestern secondary and gained a reputation as one of the team's hardest hitters. He was a Freshman All-American in 2011 when he led Northwestern with 100 tackles and followed that up with a sophomore season in which he recorded a team-high 12 pass breakups and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.
Campbell boasts four career interceptions, including one each in Northwestern's final two games of the 2012 campaign (vs. Illinois, vs. Mississippi State).
Established in 1986, the Jim Thorpe Award is named in honor of one of America's greatest all-around athletes who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker as well as at defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
The Thorpe winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 12 on ESPN.
