EVANSTON, Ill. - Kevin Bentley, a junior linebacker for the Northwestern University football team, was awarded preseason first-team All-America honors in the Street & Smith's College Football Preview issue which recently hit newsstands.

Bentley led the Wildcats and the Big Ten with 148 tackles in 1999, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors from the media and honorable mention All-Big Ten from the coaches. His tackle total was good for fifth in the country. Bentley also intercepted two passes, including one for a touchdown against Purdue, and led the Wildcats with two fumble recoveries.

Bentley is one of just eight juniors among the 22 players named first-team All-America. All the other players listed are seniors.

Bentley is also one of six Big Ten players to earn first-team All-America honors from the Street & Smith's publication. The others are quarterback Drew Brees (Purdue), offensive linemen Ben Hamilton (Minnesota) and Steve Hutchinson (Michigan), defensive lineman Karon Riley (Minnesota) and defensive back Jamar Fletcher (Wisconsin).

The Northwestern University football team opens up the 2000 campaign on Thursday, August 31, at home against Northern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central.
