EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head football coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Monday the commitment to NU of defensive back and 2012 Stanford graduate Quinn Evans. Evans will pursue a master's degree in Northwestern's School of Continuing Studies and be eligible to compete in the 2012 season.
Evans redshirted his freshman campaign at Stanford and over the next two years played in 20 games with 13 tackles before missing all of 2011 due to injury. A valuable contributor on special teams as well as at cornerback for the Cardinal, Evans will receive his undergraduate degree in sociology from Stanford this month.
"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to finish my college football and academic careers at Northwestern," Evans said. "My visit to campus and the relationships I've developed with Coach Fitzgerald and other members of the Northwestern football program have left no doubt that NU is the right fit for me at this time. I'm looking forward to meeting my new teammates at the start of camp and contributing any way I can to our success this season."
A native of Chandler, Ariz., Evans graduated from Basha High School after attending Hamilton High School for three seasons. As a senior in 2007, Evans was named a first-team all-state Class 5A selection at running back by the Arizona Republic and received second-team all-state honors at cornerback. He also made two appearances with Hamilton in the 5A Division I Arizona state championship game, winning the title as a junior in 2006.
Evans joins Northwestern's group of 21 scholarship newcomers previously announced
by Fitzgerald for the 2012 season.
Northwestern kicks off the 2012 season at Syracuse on Sept. 1 before hosting Vanderbilt in its home-opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.
