EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will play a record three Big Ten Conference football games in primetime this season--all in succession--starting with an Oct. 8 clash against Legends Division rival Michigan. The three primetime games are part of a Big Ten-record 14 night games -- seven airing on ABC/ESPN and seven on the Big Ten Network.
Northwestern is playing two of its three primetime tilts at home -- just the 13th and 14th night games ever to be contested at Ryan Field. Besides the Oct. 8 game versus the Wolverines, the Wildcats also play Penn State under the lights on Oct. 22, which is homecoming weekend at Northwestern. The Wildcats also take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in primetime in Iowa City on Oct. 15. All three games kick off at 6 p.m. CT and are being televised by the Big Ten Network.
"We're excited about the opportunity to showcase our program in such a coveted timeslot for college football," said NU coach Pat Fitzgerald. "There is always a little more electricity involved with night games, so it should make for some terrific atmospheres for our players and fans."
Northwestern's three primetime appearances presently ranks second among Big Ten schools, just behind Wisconsin, which is playing four night games this fall. The Wildcats, along with the Badgers, are both playing three Big Ten games under the lights.
