EVANSTON, Ill. -- In concordance with the new divisional alignment announced by the Big Ten on April 28, the league on Thursday released dates and matchups for the 2014 Big Ten Conference football schedule. Northwestern's eight-game conference slate in 2014 begins Sept. 27 with a cross-divisional matchup at Penn State and features home contests against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan and Illinois.

Beginning in 2014, the Big Ten football division alignments will feature Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers in the East Division and Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin in the West Division. Each school will play the other six schools in its division plus two teams from the other division in 2014 and 2015, which will serve as transitional years in which the schools will still be playing eight-game schedules.

Beginning in 2016, each school will play three teams from the other division as part of its nine-game schedule.

Along with its conference-opener in State College, Northwestern's additional cross-divisional game falls on Nov. 8 when the Wildcats host Michigan, bringing the Wolverines to Evanston for a second consecutive season.

Northwestern also will be tasked with road games against divisional opponents Minnesota (Oct. 11), Iowa (Nov. 1) and Purdue (Nov. 22).

The 2014 Big Ten season will kick off with conference newcomer Rutgers making its debut in the league by hosting Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 13.
