EVANSTON, Ill. -- Just two months removed from its New Year's Day appearance in the Outback Bowl, Northwestern is set to begin its 2010 spring drills later this month. The Wildcats, who are coming off back-to-back bowl campaigns, begin their spring season on Monday, March 29 with an early-morning practice session.

Northwestern will conduct 15 spring practices, which includes the annual Spring Scrimmage at noon on Saturday, April 24.

The Wildcats' weekday practices are once again being held in the morning, with all sessions starting at either 8:15 or 8:30 a.m. Saturday practices, other than the Spring Game, begin at 9:30 a.m.

Northwestern is returning 16 starters (8 offense, 6 defense, 2 special teams) in 2010. The Wildcats' biggest offseason questions come at quarterback, where Dan Persa is set to assume the duties; on the defensive line, where two starters must be replaced; and in the secondary, where three starters have graduated.

"Without question, the strength of our program right now is the great depth that we have," says fifth-year head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who has guided the Wildcats to 17 wins the past two seasons. "That attribute lends itself to tremendous competition in practice, so I'm anxious to watch our players compete. While we have a significant number of starters returning, everyone has an opportunity to improve his play and challenge for a starting position in the spring. Following another strong offseason of winter workouts, we're ready to get our spring season underway."

Northwestern returns a number of key performers on both sides of the ball: its entire offensive line led by tackle Al Netter, wide receivers Sidney Stewart, Demetrius Fields and Jeremy Ebert, superback Drake Dunsmore, defensive tackle Corbin Bryant, defensive end Vince Browne, linebackers Quentin Davie and Nate Williams, and cornerback Jordan Mabin.

NOTE: Spring practices, other than the Spring Scrimmage, are CLOSED to the general public. For high school coaches, scouts, friends of the program, etc., wishing to attend practice, please contact Carolyn Fleming (Email: c-fleming@northwestern.edu) in Northwestern's football office (847-467-3708) for a practice credential.
