EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the start of spring practice only two weeks away, Northwestern began building the foundation for the 2013 campaign Tuesday by announcing the 14 members of the 2013 Leadership Council. Determined through a team-wide voting process, the unit meets regularly with head coach Pat Fitzgerald throughout the year to open lines of communication with the coaching staff and discuss issues that affect the entire program.
Past decisions made with significant input from Northwestern's Leadership Council include team goal-setting, uniform design and optimal day-of-game meeting schedules.
Once again, the rising senior class is the most heavily represented with six members on the 2013 Council. Defensive end Tyler Scott and wide receiver Mike Jensen are the longest-serving representatives in this year's group, with both returning for their third year as part of the Leadership Council.
QB Kain Colter and LB Damien Proby each were voted in for their second year of service while defensive tackle Will Hampton and wide receiver Rashad Lawrence will be newcomers to the Council during their senior campaigns.
Players on the Council entering their junior seasons of playing eligibility include safety Ibraheim Campbell
and WR Christian Jones
-- both returning members of the unit from 2012 -- along with QB Trevor Siemian
, center Brandon Vitabile
and defensive tackle Sean McEvilly
Cornerback Nick VanHoose and superback Dan Vitale will represent players entering their second seasons on the field, while linebacker Jaylen Prater was voted to the Leadership Council from among the class of 2012 redshirt freshmen.
Instituted by Fitzgerald before the 2008 season, the Leadership Council aims to promote ownership of the program for players at every age level. With each Council member serving as a team captain in the annual Wildcat Games, the program also encourages competition in all aspects of the NU football experience.
Following a draft of every player on the roster, the Leadership Council captains attach a team name to their respective Wildcat Games squad, one that must be related in some way to Northwestern, Wildcats, winning, victory, etc. Each team has a mixture of offensive and defensive players, as well as older and younger, who battle to accumulate points from now through the beginning preseason camp. Teams engage in daily competitions in the weight room, winter conditioning and spring football practice as well as in academics and community outreach.
Coming off a 10-win season and a TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl championship, Northwestern returns to the practice field on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 27.
