EVANSTON, Ill. -- Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald and the Northwestern University football program announced today the signing of 17 recruits to National Letters of Intent.

This year's class is once again balanced, with nine signees on offense and eight on defense. Northwestern's 17 commits hail from 10 states. The Wildcats signed three players apiece from Ohio and Florida, and also landed a pair of players each from California, Michigan and Texas. Northwestern signed one player each from Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

"I'm excited about this class because they are a tremendous fit for our football program, not just athletically, but academically and socially," said Fitzgerald. "From a depth standpoint, there's good balance in the class. We were able to go into several talent-rich football states and attract some quality student-athletes to our program. I believe that some of these young men are going to have a chance to be competitive right away."

Northwestern graduated 21 student-athletes from its 2009 bowl squad, 12 of them offensive players and the other nine on defense. Despite the 21 departures, the Wildcats still have a significant amount of experience returning next fall, with 16 starters expected back.

"Most importantly, I want to thank our coaching staff and players, who deserve a great deal of credit for attracting our recruiting class this year," said Fitzgerald. "Our student-athletes represent our University so well and they really do a great job of educating these young men on what it means and takes to be a Wildcat. Our coaching staff, led by recruiting coordinator Adam Cushing, did another fantastic job. I also want to thank our talented staff who assisted with the recruitment process: Sharrod Everett, David Reitz, Cody Cejda and Nolan Jones."
