SIGNING DAY BLOG and Twitter (NU_Sports)
6:04 a.m. CT -- Good Morning from Evanston!!
6:05 a.m. CT -- It's Football Signing Day, and in my eyes the "official" start of the 2010 football season. This is always an exciting day for not only the prospects around the country, but for football coaching staffs who get to relax for a bit after a grueling few months of coaching and recruiting.
6:06 a.m. CT -- Our first commitment for the 2010 class is RASHAD LAWRENCE, a wide receiver from Orlando's Olympia H.S. -- Congrats Rashad!
6:11 a.m. CT -- Another East Coast signee -- BRANDON VITABILE, a center from Bishop Ahr H.S. in Edison, N.J. Congrats Brandon! BTW, Brandon pronounces his last name vuh-TOB-uh-lay
6:15 a.m. CT -- The second half of NU's Olympia H.S. connection -- TREVOR SIEMIAN, the quarterback who threw Rashad all his passes in Orlando. Congrats Trevor!
6:21 a.m. CT -- One of Michigan's top prospects and perhaps its best offensive lineman is now a Wildcat -- PAUL JORGENSEN, a tackle from DeWitt, Mich., which sits just outside Lansing. Congrats Paul!
6:32 a.m. CT -- Just a reminder that prospects can fax their National Letters of Intent (NLI's as we call them!) starting at 7 a.m. local time -- thus the only NLI's we can receive between 6 and 7 a.m. CT are those from the Eastern time zone. Get ready for a wave of CT faxes at the top of the hour! Who will be first???
6:40 a.m. CT -- While we have a short break, I want to give a "shout-out" to Aaron Hosman, our director of compliance for his help this morning! Aaron is in the football office, signing off on the faxed NLI's and keeping NUsports.com up-to-date on the arrival of the faxes.
6:47 a.m. CT -- Signee No. 5 is here -- TONY JONES, one of the top wide receivers in the Midwest, and recently tabbed a Detroit News Top 15 Blue-Chip Recruit -- Congrats Tony!
6:50 a.m. CT -- Our first Ohioan is signed -- C.J. BRYANT, a cornerback from Gahanna Lincoln H.S. -- Congrats C.J.!
6:56 a.m. CT -- Our only Keystone State signee is all set -- IBRAHEIM CAMPBELL (pronounced E-bruh-heem) from Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill Academy. He was a great two-way player at CHA, but plans to play in the 'Cats' defensive backfield. Congrats Ibraheim!
6:59 a.m. CT -- Our second Ohioan -- CHI CHI ARIGUZO, a linebacker from state power St. Francis DeSales in Columbus is signed. Congrats Chi Chi! (Chi Chi's legal first name is Ikechi, btw, which is where Chi Chi comes from -- gotta love that name!)
7:04 a.m. CT -- Our first Central Time zone recruit is in -- the winner is COLLIN ELLIS, a linebacker from the Baton Rouge area. This is the second straight year the 'Cats have snared a player from the Bayou state -- Cooper Gerami from Lafayette was a freshman this past season. Congrats Collin!
7:12 a.m. CT -- Don't forget to catch the Big Ten Network's Signing Day special today -- it airs at 3 p.m. CT.
7:15 a.m. CT -- Congrats to the NU hoopsters for last night's big 67-52 win over the Michigan Wolverines! Cats sweep the season series from the Maize and Blue. Go Cats!
7:17 a.m. CT -- Our third Ohioan is signed -- JIMMY HALL, a receiver from Toledo. Three Ohio signees gives NU 14 players from the Buckeye state, second-most behind Illinois.
7:30 a.m. CT -- Quick recap: 90 minutes into Signing Day, the Wildcats have signed 10 players thus far. More to come!
7:56 a.m. CT -- Here's our local signee -- CHANCE CARTER, the Evanston native who played at Loyola Academy. Chance is projected to play defensive end for the 'Cats. Congrats Chance!
7:57 a.m. CT -- Our final Eastern time zone recruit is signed, and our third Floridian -- DANIEL JONES, a defensive back from Tallahassee's Florida High School. Congrats Daniel!
8:09 a.m. CT -- Our first Lone Star state signee -- WILL HAMPTON, a 270-pound defensive tackle from Houston's Cy-Creek H.S. Congrats Will!
8:26 a.m. CT -- NU's second Texas signee is in -- VENRIC MARK, a speedster from Houston's St. Pius X H.S. Could be a terrific return specialist for the 'Cats in the years to come.
8:37 a.m. CT -- Besides the BTN's special Signing Day show, Coach Fitz also will appear locally on The Coach's Corner Show, which airs tonight at 9:30 p.m. on WJYS (which is broadcast on Comcast, AT&T, DirecTV, Dish Network; check local listings); also online at www.coachscornershow.com
9:08 a.m. CT -- Just a few more to go -- signee No. 15 is in -- KAIN COLTER, a true dual-threat quarterback who comes from great bloodlines -- his father was a member of the 1990 national championship team at Colorado.
9:33 a.m. CT -- While we wait for a couple more NLI's, don't forget to check out Coach Fitzgerald's noon (CT) news conference today on NUsports.com. Also, video highlights of each signee will be posted today, along with the official news release.
9:37 a.m. CT -- For those of you following us on Twitter at NU_Sports, you can check out video clips now!
10:48 a.m. CT -- Still waiting on our fax machine for some movement -- expect to have some news shortly!
10:55 a.m. CT -- Recruit No. 16 is secured -- ADONIS SMITH -- the Wildcats' lone running back in this class. Adonis hails from Junipero Serra HS in the Bay Area -- that school has produced a few "OK" athletes over the years: Tom Brady, Gregg Jefferies, Lynn Swann, Jim Fregosi and Barry Bonds.
11:03 a.m. CT -- And the 2010 class is a wrap! -- SEAN McEVILLY -- a defensive lineman is our last signee. Don't forget to watch the news conference at noon!
11:15 a.m. CT -- Special thanks to Sharrod Everett, Cody Cejda, Dave Reitz, Nolan Jones, Coach Fitz and our video staff for all their assistance in making Signing Day 2010 a huge success. Go Cats!
