    Northwestern Postgame Quotes

    Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald
    Opening Statement...
"I want to start out first and foremost by saying thanks so much to our students. It's great to see everyone back. It's terrific to have almost the entire school back together now and I really want to say thank you to them. Then obviously, the job that Maine did against us from a defensive standpoint, they did a nice job. They did a terrific job of containing us there for a little while and then once we finally got going we were able to put the scheme pretty much in control in the way that we wanted. As you look back now at the last four weeks the goal is to go 1-0 and we've been able to do that. We've had an opportunity to take a week to start school and you know, obviously get healed up, and fix the things that we need to correct, which are plenty. We'll get working on that right on Tuesday. "

On the progression of NU defensive tackles this season...
"I think they've done pretty well. I think they've been pretty active. I just got the stats put in front of me here and for the most part I think we controlled the line of scrimmage all four weeks. I think we've done a pretty good job of that."

    On DL Dean Lowry...
"He's doing a great job on his film study, great job on his preparation and he's a guy that I think through the experiences he had a year ago is really starting to come into his own. He has a great grasp of the system, plays incredibly hard with terrific effort and he's just, in my opinion, just continuing to get better and better."

    On turnovers...
"I think that it's the defense's job to create turnovers. I think we had an opportunity for another one too that we dropped. That's a potential fourth one there and then I think there was a tip that we had a chance on. We could have had five today. So, those are things that we talk about a lot. We emphasize taking the football away and we've just got to execute cleaner on offense. We'll take a hard look as coaches. What are we doing schematically? Are we putting too many things in? Are we trying to do too many things that we can't execute? They just looked like some discipline and fundamental and technique things to those and me are all coachable and correctable."

    On upcoming Ohio State...
"I think we've been a part of a lot of games that are important. This is the first opportunity to play Big Ten football so that's why it's important. That's why all of our guys come here. It's one of the first things we talk about in recruiting, is the opportunity to play Big Ten football at the best academic school in the country. And our guys are excited for that challenge to play in this conference. We got through the nonconference slate unblemished and that's kind of the goal and now everything starts over."

    Northwestern Player Quotes
    WR Tony Jones

On Northwestern's `swagger' this season... "We do [want to play with swagger]. Coach Fitz has been on us for that because we're ranked. Go out there and have some swag. I've seen glimpses of it. We just need to play a lot better. Your swag is dependent on how you're playing. So we just have to step it up.

On what that swagger looks like...
Guys on each other's hats, celebrating. Just a confident demeanor about ourselves, but obviously that confidence has to translate over to execution.

    On the offense's inconsistency...
"I have to look at the tape tomorrow and really break it down. But really just execution. We're just not making all the plays that need to be made in order to play at the level we feel like we're capable of."

On his feelings on how Northwestern played today...
"It's obviously great to win the ball game, but we know we've got so much left in the tank, which at the same is pretty exciting to know that we're winning ball games, and for the second straight week, coming back from a ball game knowing we could have played better. It just keeps us hungry and we know the potential that this team has if we play to our capabilities."

On touchdown catch, making a move to the sideline...
"That was just a great read by [quarterback] Kain [Colter], came backside sitting back in the hole. As soon as I caught it, bounced it outside and picked up a couple of key blocks that escorted me into the end zone."

    DL Dean Lowry

On his interception return for a touchdown...
"That was a blitz we ran and [linebacker] Collin [Ellis] made a great play and got to the quarterback, brought him down and the quarterback just threw it up. I was just in the right place at the right time and I ran it back. It was cool because in the Cal game, I had a tip and Collin returned that. So, it was cool for me to get one off of Collin."

On if the defense talks about trying to score touchdowns...
"Yeah, it's something we preach everyday at practice and before games. Turnovers are huge, especially with that margin, to keep winning games."

    RB Mike Trumpy

On his comfort level running the ball...
"It starts off with the offensive line. I thought they did a great job today. I think each week they continue to improve and I'm just trying to do what I can to help out the team in any situation possible."

On looking ahead to Ohio State...
"One thing that Coach Fitz always talks about is, no matter who the opponent is, we treat them the same. Whether it's Maine or Ohio State, we come in ready to prepare and compete and to play. For us, it's not anything different. We're just going to come in ready to work for the opponent we're going to face."

On the play of the offense the last two games...
"I don't think there's anything wrong. I think we just need to get back to the little things, really at every position. We need to work on finishing as well, getting back to the basics. Fortunately we have two weeks to do that. We'll get back into the groove and do that."

    LB Damien Proby

On his first interception of his playing career at any level...
Yeah. That was an exciting one. I'm happy for it. But, yes it was [his first interception] to answer your question."

On if it was his first defensive touchdown ever at any level...
"I've had a fumble I've scored for. But interception-wise and distance, yes."

On when he saw the ball tipped up in the air...
"Honestly just get home. Just get there. It was a good thing the defense was there, the defensive line in front of me. I had the cavalry there to help me walk it in. So, it was a good play I'm happy for it."

On if he kept the football...
"I did not. I should have, but I did not."

On Maine's success passing to the tight end...
"Maine is very well coached. Their coaching staff has been with them for quite a long time. They scouted us very well. They know that we play relatively aggressive on the run and they hit us in a weak spot of our defense for some of the stuff we were running. It's just getting back to fundamental football, listening to [defensive coordinator] Coach Hank's [Mike Hankwitz] adjustments and it helped us at the end of the game fix the problems we had at the beginning.

    Maine Quotes
    Head Coach Jack Cosgrove

    Opening Statement...
"I thought maybe if we don't throw two interceptions that they run back for touchdowns, maybe we're still playing. I thought we played really hard, I liked the way we finished the football game offensively because we had some rough go's, we didn't finish some drives in the first half of the football game. Our defense played their fannies off for three quarters; I thought they were outstanding. They're a very talented football team. We made too many mistakes to be there at the end, but facts are facts, they got 14 points off of turnovers, and that's how we lost the football game; [at least] that's the margin we lost the football game by. Like I said, we fought hard and fought to the end, it was good to see that. This is going to help us in a lot of ways, to learn more about who we are and who we can be. We're looking forward to the opportunity to get into conference play, and see what we're all about in the CAA."

    On dealing with the loss...
"Well, this is our first loss, this is the first experience we've had together with this football team on a loss. Let's face it, we lost to the 16th-ranked team in the country, and not in our own division, in the division up. I mean, we're an unranked team. We threw punches with them through the course of the game, we didn't back down. I thought, like I said, our defense played their fannies off, kept us in the game. We got behind and, like I said, it was pleasing was how the offense finally, after a couple missed field goals and those turnovers, was able to put up 21 points and really play with some moxie."

    Player Quotes
    LB Troy Eastman

On what can be taken from the loss...
"It's a loss. We aren't here to glorify it. We're not happy with the outcome of the game. I think we played tough. At times, we had opportunities to win the football game. We're going to get back to work and get it fixed and get ready for the next game."

On playing tough until the fourth quarter...
"I don't think we were worn out. Just the way the game went, they had success late. We had success early and didn't finish the ballgame."

    TE Justin Perillo

    On the team's performance...
"The defense played great all game. The offense, we had a couple opportunities in the first half to punch in points, but we couldn't capitalize off of that. We still played hard and never gave up. We put up 21 points against the 16th-ranked team in the country, not even in our division. We're just excited to get back to practice on Tuesday and get ready for Richmond."
