    NORTHWESTERN POSTGAME NOTES

    Vanderbilt at Northwestern o Sept. 8, 2012
    Ryan Field - Evanston, Ill.
    Attendance: 31,644

    Northwestern Team Notes

    • This was the fourth meeting between Northwestern and Vanderbilt. NU takes the series lead (2-1-1), and has won the last two meetings.
    • Tonight's attendance of 31,644 is the most for a home opener since the 2001 season (vs. Michigan State).
    • The win marks the fifth straight season NU has taken its first two games and for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
    • The game marked 11th time NU has faced a Southeastern Conference opponent, with the last two contests (both wins) against the Commodores.
    • Coach Pat Fitzgerald owns a 17-9 record in September. He has won every one of his home openers since he lost in 2006, his first year at the Wildcat helm
    • With his 42nd career win, Fitzgerald is now only seven victories shy of the Wildcat coaching record of 49 held by Lynn 'Pappy' Waldorf (1935-46).
    • With two fumble recoveries tonight, the NU defense has forced at least one turnover in the last 16 games. The Wildcats have at least one fumble recovery or interception in 38 of the last 41 contests.
    • Northwestern has now scored in double figures in 62 straight games.
    • Northwestern Individual Notes

      • Junior QB Kain Colter was the game's No. 2 rusher with 66 yards, including the game's final touchdown and longest rush of 29 yards.
      • Colter (7-of-15, 42 yards) and sophomore QB Trevor Siemian (10-of-16, 91 yards) completed passes to nine different receivers.
      • Siemian completed 8-of-12 passes in the fourth quarter for 90 of his game's 91 yards, a 34-yarder to Junior WR Rashad Lawrence, the 'Cats' longest pass play.
      • Lawrence tied sophomore WR Kyle Prater (who made his Ryan Field debut) and sophomore WR Tony Jones for the team lead with three receptions, and had the team's largest yardage total of 49 yards.
      • Junior RB Venric Mark surpassed career highs with 24 rushing attempts for 123 yards. Through two games, he has rushed for 205 yards, eclipsing the 167 he tallied during the first two years of his collegiate career.
      • Mark gained 78 of his 123 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
      • Mark became the first Wildcat to gain over 100 yards rushing since Jacob Schmidt had 110 against Indiana on October 28, 2011. His 123 rushing yards are the most by an NU player since Mike Trumpy recorded 129 vs. Illinois on Nov. 20, 2010.
      • Sophomore LB Chi Chi Ariguzo recorded his first sack of the year and registered a career single-game high 3.0 tackles for loss, the most of any player
      • Ariguzo led all tacklers with 10 stops and eight solos. Both numbers are career single-game highs.
      • Senior DT Brian Arnfelt notched his first sack of the season and was credited with 2.0 tackles for loss, as was junior DE Tyler Scott.
      • Junior K Jeff Budzien has converted on all 59 PATs in his Wildcat career, a school record for most consecutive point-afters.
      • Budzien's 40-yard field goal makes him three-of-six when attempting three-pointers of 40 or more yards. Tonight's 40- and 37-yarders are his first two of the season.
