'Cats Make Second-Straight Bowl Appearance; Fall Short to Vols

    Wildcats 28
    Tennessee 48

Despite rallying from a 21-0 first quarter deficit to tie the score, Peyton Manning and Tennessee were too much for Northwestern as the Volunteers posted a 48-28 Citrus Bowl win.

Manning threw two TDs and ran for another as the Vols built a 21-0 lead with 2:00 left in the first quarter. Northwestern came back in the second quarter as Darnell Autry scored twice on runs of two and 28 yards and Brian Musso hauled in a 20-yard TD pass from Steve Schnur to knot the score at 21-21. The Volunteers went back up by seven less than 30 seconds later and added a field goal as time expired to go up 31-21 at half. On the third play of the second half, Tennessee intercepted a Schnur pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown and a 38-21 lead. NU would add one more score on a 22-yard TD pass from Schnur to D'Wayne Bates, but it wasn't enough.

Schnur threw for 228 yards and two scores, Barry Gardner led the way on defense with 10 tackles.
