'Cats get ambushed by the Nittany Lions

        Wildcats 9
        Penn State 34

Costly turnovers and a ferocious Penn State defense were too much for Northwestern to overcome as they fell to the Nittany Lions, 34-9.

After going on top 7-0, PSU recovered an NU fumble on the ensuing kickoff and moments later it was 14-0, Penn State. Brian Gowins nailed a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-3, but a big PSU pass reception went for a touchdown and NU found themselves down 21-3. Northwestern would score only one more time when Steve Schnur hooked up with D'Wayne Bates on a career-long 78 yard touchdown.

Schnur, who was pressured all day, threw for 278 yards and a score. Darnell Autry returned from a shoulder sprain to rush for 107 yards, while Bates had 112 yards receiving. Barry Gardner was one of the bright spots on defense, registering 14 tackles.
