NU Holds off Second-Half Gopher Rally

        Wildcats 26
        Minnesota 24

Northwestern raced to a 23-0 halftime lead, then held off a late Minnesota rally to escape with a 26-24 win.

It was all NU in the first half as they rang up 332 yards while holding the Gophers to just 63. A Darnell Autry one-yard run and a 66-yard bomb from Steve Schnur to D'Wayne Bates put the 'Cats up 14-0 less than eight minutes into the game. A Brian Gowins field goal and a Schnur one-yard keeper made it 23-0. Minnesota came out fired up in the second half as they put up 18 third-quarter points to close the gap. Gowins added a field goal, but another Gopher touchdown cut the lead to 26-24. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and NU killed a late rally to hang on for the win. It was Northwestern's 11th consecutive Big Ten win.

Autry carried a career-tying high 41 times for 189 yards and a score, his 19th-straight game of more than 100 yards. Bates had 120 yards on five catches and a TD. Schnur continued to have the hot hand connecting on 17-of-25 for 278 yards and a touchdown.
