    Big Plays from Autry and Bates Thwart Hoosiers

    Indiana jumped out to a 17-7 second-quarter lead before Northwestern rallied for 28 points and a 35-17 win.

    Darnell Autry put NU on the board with a 50-yard TD burst and D'Wayne Bates hauled in a 65-yard pass from Schnur to cut the Indiana lead to 17-14 at the half. Two more Autry TDs, a one-yard plunge and a 23-yard scamper, and another Bates catch, this one a five-yard strike from Schnur, closed the scoring. The NU defense also clamped down in the second half, allowing just 53 yards after the break. NU also allowed Indiana to convert just two of nine third-down conversions.

    Bates had a spectacular game as he caught six passes for a career- high 159 yards and two scores. Schnur completed 17 of 23 passes for 231 yards and two TD's and Autry had 128 yards on 17 carries with three scores. Casey Dailey and Joe Reiff had two sacks apiece.
