EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern plays its lone exhibition game of the 2013-14 season as it hosts Lewis University at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip-off is set for approximately 7:15 p.m.
The contest marks the debut of NU first-year head coach Chris Collins who previously served as an assistant coach at Duke for the last 13 seasons. Collins is the 24th head coach in school history.
The Wildcats defeated University of Chicago in its lone exhibition game last season, 70-46. Drew Crawford paced a balanced Northwestern scoring effort with 13 points while Alex Olah contributed 12 points and Tre Demps added 11.
Crawford headlines the returners for the 'Cats. The fifth-year senior will enter the regular season as the school's No. 10 all-time leading scorer with a 1,418 career points.
Also returning as starters for Northwestern are junior guard Dave Sobolewski and Olah, a sophomore center. Redshirt junior guard JerShon Cobb is also back in the fold after sitting out all of the the 2012-13 campaign.
The contest begins a stretch to begin the season that sees Northwestern take on four schools from the state of Illinois over a five-game span. The Wildcats open their regular season Saturday at home against Eastern Illinois. Following a trip to Stanford, NU hosts Illinois State Nov. 17 before making the short trek to UIC Nov. 20.
The Flyers, who compete at the NCAA Division II level, are coming off a 19-9 season a year ago, including a 12-6 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Junior guard Ryan Jackson led the team in scoring last season, posting an average of 16.9 points per contest.
Lewis has gotten its season off to a solid start, dropping a close 84-79 decision at DePaul last Tuesday before defeating Loyola Chicago 82-70 on Saturday. Junior Julian Lewis paced the Flyers with 24 points in the win over the Ramblers.
Scott Trost is in his eighth season as the head coach at Lewis. He was previously the head coach at Illinois Wesleyan and was also an assistant at Michigan from 1996-2001.
Northwestern opens its 2013-14 regular season at home Saturday as it takes on Eastern Illinois. The contest gets underway at 7:30 p.m. and is being televised live by Big Ten Network.
