2010-11 Northwestern Men's Basketball Schedule
EVANSTON, Ill. -
A home game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and a pair of games at Madison Square Garden in New York City highlight the nonconference portion of the 2010-11 Northwestern men's basketball schedule released today (Sept. 29).
The Big Ten conference schedule was previously released Aug. 26.
NU is slated to play at least 13 games against teams that participated in postseason action a year ago.
After hosting Robert Morris (Ill.) in an exhibition game Nov. 4, the Wildcats open their regular season with a pair of road games. They'll make the short trip west to DeKalb to take on Northern Illinois Nov. 12 before heading to Texas-Pan American Nov. 17.
What should prove to be an exciting weekend of Northwestern athletics gets underway Nov. 19 when the Wildcats open their home schedule by taking on Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Lions participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, defeating Winthrop in an opening-round game before falling to eventual national champion Duke in the first round. The contest between the NU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff precedes the Wildcat football team taking on Illinois at Wrigley Field the following day.
Northwestern's five-game homestand continues Nov. 28 as the Wildcats welcome traditional Missouri Valley Conference power Creighton. Two days later, NU participates in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge as Georgia Tech visits Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Yellow Jackets defeated Oklahoma State in the first round of last year's NCAA tournament before being eliminated by Ohio State.
The Wildcats take a lengthy break for final exams before returning to action Dec. 13 against Long Island. The five-game home stretch concludes Dec. 16 as Northwestern takes on American.
One of the main highlights of the Wildcats' nonconference slate follows on Dec. 20-21 as they head to New York City to participate in the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival. NU takes on St. Francis (N.Y.) the first night before taking on either St. John's or Davidson the following day.
Pre-conference play concludes Dec. 23 as Northwestern hosts Mount St. Mary's in a rare weekday afternoon tilt. The Wildcats play one final nonconference game Jan. 20 as they host SIU-Edwardsville in a game that precedes a contest between the NU women's team and Michigan.
Northwestern is coming off its winningest campaign in program history a year ago and their second consecutive appearance in the National Invitation Tournament. The Wildcats return four starters and a Big Ten-leading 12 letterwinners for 2010-11.
