EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern junior-to-be Alex Marcotullio wrapped up competition at the FIBA Under-20 European Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia, over the weekend as a member of Great Britain's squad.
In his second year as a member of the team, Marcotullio posted impressive numbers, averaging 16.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game. His steals average ranked fifth among all players in the division, while his 3.2 3-point field goals per game ranked third.
Great Britain finished in a misleading 13th place in Division B, bouncing back to win its last seven games after dropping its first two. The pair of defeats came by a combined seven points to Portugal (60-57) and Finland (72-68) set the team back in pool play before the Brits bounced back to defeat Luxembourg (85-56), Norway (78-64) and the previously undefeated Czech Republic (85-74).
Forced to settle to compete in the 9th- through 16th-place bracket, the squad extended its winning streak to five with victories over Israel (83-82) and Iceland (72-70). However, Great Britain lost out on the point-differential tiebreaker and was then left to determine 13th through 16th place.
The disappointment failed to slow the team down, though, as it concluded the tournament with a resounding 104-50 victory over Romania and a second win over Iceland (83-71).
Marcotullio's top individual highlight came in the one-point win over Israel as his offensive rebound and put-back at the buzzer was the game-winner. He scored in double figures in all nine contests, posting tournament bests of 24 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in the final game against Iceland.
He also posted 20 points in just 23 minutes of action in the thumping of Romania, connecting on each of his first six 3-point attempts in the contest.
